Our Week With Newburgh UMC

As we prepare for a busy summer season of volunteer groups to begin next week, we're excited to share pictures from the amazing teams that worked with us this spring!

First up is our week with our friends and long-time supporters from Newburgh United Methodist Church in Newburgh, Indiana!

This team was the first to work on our soccer and basketball court project at the Instituto Indigena “Nuestra Señora del Socorro” (the Indigenous Institute "Our Lady of Help"), an all-girls boarding school in San Andrés Semetebaj.

The team spent most of their week with shovels in hand as they worked to level the ground with fill dirt and lay out metal forms for the concrete slabs that would eventually be poured to create the court. Flexibility is key for the first team to work on any project, and we were thankful to the team from Newburgh for being ready to help in any way needed.

At the end of the week, the group had the honor of attending–alongside the entire student body–a Mayan ceremony held at the work site to signify the beginning of construction. The team also had the chance to tour the campus before heading down the mountain one last time.

We're thankful for the congregation from Newburgh UMC, not only for the wonderful groups of hardworking volunteers they've sent to work with us, but also for their many faithful years of support for our clinic pharmacy!

It was wonderful to spend time with friends both old and new, and we are excited to see them again in Guatemala soon!
