Introducing The Expectant Mothers Club!

Lab tests are processed in Mission Guatemala's on-site laboratory for the Expectant Mothers Club.

We are excited to announce our newest health initiative: the Expectant Mothers Club!

Prenatal care is essential for the health of both expectant mothers and their babies, but in the rural areas of Guatemala, many women face challenges in receiving this care due to lack of access or of financial resources. This can lead to risks to the mother and baby’s health due to undiagnosed complications. Early detection through routine checkups, ultrasounds, and lab tests is crucial in preventing these complications and ensuring a healthy pregnancy, reducing maternal and infant mortality rates.

Through the years, prenatal care has been one of the vital services provided in Mission Guatemala’s clinic, Clínica “La Misión”. However, on busier days at the clinic, mothers sometimes end up encountering longer wait times to see the doctor or have to come back another day for an ultrasound or for needed lab tests.

In order to help relieve this issue, as well as to further expand the care that we are able to provide for these mothers, Dr. Lidia, our clinic doctor, has now set aside a day each month to focus on providing checkups, ultrasounds, and lab tests for the expectant mothers who come to the clinic.

In addition to providing medical care for the expectant mothers, a significant portion of this day is also set aside for providing education on a variety of issues, including potential risk factors during pregnancy, the benefits of breast feeding, pregnancy-related illnesses and infections, and family planning, among others.

Through the Expectant Mothers Club, it is our hope to support mothers throughout their pregnancy, expanding access to quality and respectful care and to the knowledge and resources they need for a safer pregnancy and childbirth experience. We are grateful to Dr. Lidia and the rest of our clinic staff for their work each day to impact the health and well-being of mothers and children in San Andres Semetabaj and the surrounding areas!
